Teaching and tutoring experience:

I am a very outgoing and conscientious private tutor with over ten years’ experience, working both as a self-employed tutor and for various tutoring agencies in London (Keystone, Bonas Macfarlane, Bespoke). I enjoy tutoring students of various ages and stages in their education, specialising in the sciences and History equally. I teach both online and in-person in London, where I simultaneously enjoy a flexible schedule as a postdoctoral research fellow in History at the University of London.

I completed my own undergraduate degree at Oxford University, then staying on to gain a Distinction at Master’s level. I returned to complete my DPhil in Tudor and Stuart history with an ‘outstanding’ pass (Examiner’s Report, 2024). At Oxford I have taught more than 100 undergraduate students. I have acted as a leading undergraduate admissions interviewer (History BA and joint Schools) since 2016, making me one of the youngest-ever admissions interviewers for History.

I have privately tutored children from as young as eight to degree-level learners seeking essay-writing help. In 2016 I secured a Tutoring Standards Certificate (Merit). I have taught via Zoom during the summer holidays to children of highly mobile families, as well as ‘in residence’ Haddenham, Wallingford (both one week, Oxfordshire), Gloucestershire (four days), Cannes and Antibes (two weeks, France). Previous students have secured scholarships to Eton, Harrow, and Tonbridge at 13+, and entry to Wycombe Abbey at 14+.

Subjects covered in the last year in capacity as private tutor include: sole responsibility for homeschooling three A-Level and IGCSE Biology, Chemistry, and Physics students;providing six students one-on-one tuition in A-Level, IB, and (I)GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, and Physics (AQA, CIE, Edexcel);HAT preparation for three Oxford-entry candidates and another mature student;essay-writing help to two undergraduate students (History);preparing five students for their common entrance and three further students for the Winchester academic scholarship and exhibition exams in science.

Teaching style and philosophy:

My teaching experiences, facilitating young people’s progress into increasingly mature outlooks on their reality, have been most successful when both parties feel at ease with each other. As such, I aspire to offer students a tutorial space which feels ‘for them’ in order that they are encouraged to reciprocate this focus on their learning.

Despite working as a professional historian, it is in the sciences I most enjoy providing private school-level tuition;this allows me to keep in touch with my own interest in the subject, and to use that enthusiasm to help motivate my tutees.

Having obtained an academic scholarship via written exam to the prestigious Stephen Perse Foundation (Cambridge) when I myself was fourteen years old, I am especially sympathetic to children undergoing the rigorous school entrance process. While every pupil and their interests and needs are different, I place an emphasis on past paper practice and inspection of previous mark schemes wherever possible. This is especially salient given the very specialised and particular vocabulary required by mark schemes in order to hit those top marks (particularly in the sciences).

Additional information:

I am based in north London and see students in-person where desired and convenient. Most of my work is online, however.

I am most interested to teach History A-Level (and above), followed by Biology A-Level/IB HL, and then Biology GCSE. I also can teach Chemistry (I)/GCSE if needed, and ISEB/CE science.
