Teaching style and philosophy:
I believe that respect is of the utmost importance and always respect my student's objectives, goals and current feelings. I also believe that building up a strong rapport is vital in securing long term collaboration, as well as encouraging student engagement and investment in lessons. I treat students as my equals and often encourage them to 'take the lead' and teach concepts back to me in order to entrench a deep understanding and check whether knowledge has been assimilated. In English lessons, I believe that finding a balance between targeted skill building (critical analysis, identification of themes, finding connections and patterns, formulating and expressing complex ideas) and exam-based practice is vital. My lessons are geared towards academic success but I desire for my students to be enriched beyond the improvement in their grades and acquire true enjoyment of the subject, new ways of perceiving the world, and skills that will benefit them at university, in multiple disciplines and in their future careers. I find it rewarding to see the personal growth and development in students, particularly those who begin with low confidence in English or essay writing, and the incredible trajectories they go on to take throughout our tutoring journey together.
