MPhys First Class with Honours, Theoretical Physics
PhD Theoretical Physics
Background:
I am a teaching and research fellow at Newcastle University with over 10 years of experience in academia since the completion of my PhD (University of Leeds, passed with special recognition of excellence, after completion of an MPhys in Theoretical Physics, 1st Class with Honours). I am taking time out to spend more time with my young children, and I am looking to seriously commit to tutoring for at least 2 years.
Subjects taught:
GCSE Maths and Further/Extended Maths
A-level Maths and Further Maths
IB Maths SL and HL
A-level Physics
Undergraduate Physics, Maths, and Engineering modules in which I have requisite expertise (Quantum theory related modules including Quantum information theory, Open quantum systems theory, Quantum field theory, Quantum thermodynamics, Linear algebra, Classical mechanics and field theory, Electromagnetism and Electrodynamics, Maxwell's Equations, Fourier Analysis, Differential Equations)
Post-Graduate students looking to deepen their mathematical knowledge and receive support with specific topics in which I have expertise.
Teaching philosophy:
After over ten years of experience in teaching and research at top UK universities, Leeds, Oxford, Manchester, and Newcastle, I firmly believe that every able mind is capable of grasping advanced scientific and mathematical concepts, but since no two people learn in the same way, I adopt an approach to tuition that is centred on the individual. I get to know my students: where are they coming from, and what specific support from me will best help them to reach their goals? What specifically will they need in order to practise and consolidate their learning, and how will I know they are progressing? By answering these questions, I identify concrete learning outcomes, against which I backward align teaching activities and assessments. At the more granular level of individual lessons, learning outcomes are informed by the student’s prior knowledge and exposure, their level of preparation, and what they need to have mastered to progress at any later stage. I then teach adaptively, responding to students’ needs as they develop understanding and confidence.
I have produced teaching resources of the highest quality and rigour, from PhD to A-level. I have designed and supervised intensive courses for A-level students, which result in rapid mathematical maturation, and used this experience to produce pedagogical notes covering the A-level maths syllabus, which are readily customisable to specific student needs. Together with the right guidance, they facilitate deep and enduring understanding, enabling students to reach their full potential. Success requires more than a knowledgeable teacher and well-constructed resources, however, because active learning always risks open failure, and with that, self-exposure (D. M. Bauer Pedagogy (2007) 7 (2):157–170). An effective tutor supports students in a way that makes them feel comfortable and em- powered to engage actively. I strive to nurture growth and a growth mindset in my students, which requires a strong foundation of core knowledge, followed by investment from both student and teacher. Seldom is something of true value obtained easily.
I have successfully helped students from humble beginnings progress to the next stage of their education at the highest level.
Testiminials:
Recent A-level students
“I would just like to let you know that I have received a conditional offer to read physics at Oxford. I think it is safe to say that my Nuffield placement under your supervision and your reference letter (Which my tutor quoted in his UCAS reference) were extremely helpful, and I was asked about my placement quite extensively at my Oxford and also my Imperial College interviews. Thank youso much for your support both during and indeed after my placement, I am lucky to have had you as a mentor!".
“Adam is absolutely amazing to have as a tutor, it feels like I’m in an actual lesson, he’s clear in his teachings and makes sure that I understand what’s being discussed".
“I went from S4 (Eu system) to 2IEC in the A levels and had to catch up on a lot of material. He really helped me in catching up, the lessons are very adaptable to your liking and he explains it really well. Also every lesson is prepared in advance and all class notes etc are synced to your Google Drive folder, so you can access them later.".
“Always well prepared and provided good guidance throughout the lessons.".

“Just wanted to say thank you for your help with the project, I was really unsure on quantum mechanics before we started but it really helped with my confidence, especially for the exam. I’m thrilled with the mark I got."
"I needed last-minute help understanding some calculus concepts. Adam was available and patient. He explained things very well. I highly suggest him as a tutor."

“I think the placements that you ran this year for Hannah and Rowan were brilliant and it would be absolutely fantastic if you were able to offer placements again for next summer"
