Teaching and tutoring experience:
15 years + experience tutoring 1:1 in small groups through medical school, as a Junior doctor, and more recently in the private sector. Mostly sciences with some English, 11+ and Python Coding as well. I've taught hundreds of students at GCSE and A level as well as a dozen or more between the ages of 6 and 13.
Teaching style and philosophy:
My favourite quote about teaching is from Socrates: "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel". Whilst this is hard to achieve in today's exam-bound environment, I always strive to help students to understand the fundamentals, see the beauty in what they're learning and develop and enthusiasm to know more. I see my subjects as a tree with deep roots (fundamentals), a single trunk and main branches (core concepts) and many smaller branches and leaves (the details that are often examined). I teach my students that if they understand where the trunk and main branches are, it's much easier to "decorate" the tree with small branches and leaves, because there's a sense of how everything hangs together. Over the years I've developed a unique style which combines informality, rigour, flexibility and an integrated approach to the subject.
Additional information:
I'm based in North Wales, near Mold, but can travel to Chester, Wrexham etc if required. Most of my teaching these days is online, which I'm happy to do as well.
My experience outside teaching is varied: I've worked as a junior doctor in Wales and New Zealand, a Freediving instructor in Indonesia, and most recently as an entrepreneur in the fintech space.
