Teaching and tutoring experience:
I am currently working with tutoring companies as a maths specialist, especially at Prep School level for Year 6 - 8 preparing for Pre-tests, Common Entrance and Scholarship, alongside GCSE, and educational consultant. However, I feel that there is even more potential as I am a freelance tutor to increase my weekly diary, as this is now my main form of employment.
I was in the military and then entered education. I have taught at Caldicott, Bede's and 20 years at Cheam School, where I was Head of Maths, Head of Boarding, SLT and Head of Safeguarding. In then became Interim Head of The Unicorn School, which is an independent SEND school. During this role I have naturally become increasingly aware of SEND requirements, most especially with those pupils with SEMH, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and autism.
I have now made the decision to come out of direct education and into tutoring.
Teaching style and philosophy:
I am a calm, supportive tutor who always aims to grow a pupils confidence. As I have worked with a wide level of abilities I have a variety of skills, resources and teaching styles. I feel that my niche lies within the top end of Prep School, supporting those who find maths a challenge and building their confidence and making sure that they are able to prove a competency in the subject and achieve their senior school aspirations, whilst also stretching potential scholars. Working at Cheam we regularly sent pupils to 17 different schools per year and so I have an in depth understanding, not only of the entry procedures / exams but also admissions, school choice and selection.
Additional information:
25 years in education, both as a teacher, senior leader and head, I have plenty of relevant experience. I always make sure that I relate my lessons to pupils interests etc. For me these include dog walking, Polzeath, cooking, golf and polo.
We are relocating back to Berkshire in July (from Sussex) and so will be able to teach online, but also it is only a 40 minute train journey to London so I would be able to do some face to face tutoring in Central London. However, I would need to tie up several sessions to make this viable. Although I am a member of a London Club and so can link some face to face with online if needed.
