Frequently Asked Questions
How much does tutoring cost?
Prices start at £35/hr and vary depending on the tutor's experience, subject, and demand — a recent graduate will be priced differently to Head of Department at Eton with decades of experience. You'll see the exact rate for each tutor before you commit to anything. For further details on payments please visit www.pegasustutors.co.uk/payment.
What's included in the price — do you take a commission?
Yes — Pegasus takes a commission of around 20% on top of the tutor's rate. This covers the vetting and matching process, ongoing support if anything needs adjusting, invoicing, and DBS checks, so you're not left managing any of that directly with the tutor yourself.
How do you match me with a tutor?
Every request is reviewed personally — we hand-pick tutors based on the subject, level, and any specific requirements you mention (school entrance exams, SEN needs, scheduling, etc.), drawing on our full roster of vetted tutors. If you'd like to explore options yourself first, our matching tool lets you filter by subject, level, budget and availability.
Online or in-person — what's the difference?
Many of our tutors offer both. Online lessons work well for regular weekly sessions and give you access to a wider pool of specialist tutors regardless of location. In-person lessons are popular for exam-intensive periods or younger children who benefit from being in the room. Rates may differ slightly between the two — this is shown per tutor.
How quickly will I hear back / be matched?
We aim to respond to every enquiry within 24 hours. Once we've suggested a tutor, they typically confirm within 24 hours for online lessons, or 48 hours for in-person lessons. Occasionally it takes a little longer — for example if a tutor isn't available and we need to find an alternative — but we move as quickly as we can at every step.
Are your tutors vetted?
Yes. Every tutor goes through an application and interview process, and holds a valid Enhanced DBS check before being introduced to a family. We look closely at academic background, teaching experience, and — critically — their personality and teaching style.
What happens after I get in touch?
We'll recommend a small selection of well-matched tutors, get a trial lesson booked in, and take it from there. If the trial goes well, you can book ongoing lessons directly through your tutor — invoicing and payment are handled automatically so there's no admin on your end.
What if it's not quite the right fit, or I need to cancel a session?
If a tutor isn't quite the right fit, just let us know and we'll find someone better suited — it happens occasionally and isn't a problem. If you need to cancel a booked session, we ask for as much notice as possible: no charge with more than 48 hours' notice, up to 50% of the session fee within 48 hours, and up to 100% within 24 hours — a courtesy to your tutor, who's set aside dedicated time for the lesson. First-time cancellations are often waived at the tutor's discretion. Full details can be found at www.pegasustutors.co.uk/payment
What subjects and levels do you cover?
