Teaching and tutoring experience

James taught on the Eton Japanese Summer School for four summers (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017). He was responsible for the students' education, safety and well-being throughout the residential language course, which lasted for three weeks. In Summer 2017, James was the Director of a boarding house, meaning he was solely responsible for 40 Japanese students (13-17 years old), and a team of five English staff.

James has tutored for a company called Arch Education for 18 months. They offer university application guidance to their clients: he has been successful helping students with degree course selection, personal statement writing, aptitude test preparation and interview practice.

In addition, James has tutored a number of students from Hall Grove School (his prep school) for scholarship exams at schools including Eton, Winchester, Radley, Hampton and Wellington.

Additional information

Following good results in his First Year exams at Oxford, James was awarded an Academic Scholarship by Pembroke College. He was also awarded a King's Scholarship at Eton, but chose to enter as an Oppidan Scholar instead. James felt very lucky to be chosen as a school prefect and Captain of the Oppidans (one of three head boy roles) during his final year at Eton.

Outside the classroom he has always enjoyed playing sport. At university, he played for the Oxford University Hockey Club, and was captain of the Pembroke College Men's team, as well as playing football for his college. At Eton, James represented the 1st team at rugby and hockey, and was a sprinter in the athletics team. He enjoys playing tennis and skiing (he spent last winter working in a ski resort in France).

James is also a committed musician, and played the saxophone in concert bands both at university and at school.
