Teaching and tutoring experience:

I have been tutoring professionally since graduating in 2019. I have worked with a wide range of students from ages 11 to 18, covering everything from BBC Bitesize Key Stage English through to A-Level and uni preparation. I have worked with several tutoring agencies including QED Education, Chancellor's Tuition, De Silva Tutors and The Degree Gap. I have taught students based in the UK as well as foreign language students based in China & Japan. I have also taught English to high school students at Toshin Global English Camp in Tokyo.

Teaching style and philosophy:

My teaching style focuses on the core skill of academic English study: close-reading. This applies at all ages and skill levels, for younger students we look at texts, discuss a passage and do comprehension tasks and for older students the texts will be harder, we will look more in depth at literary techniques and incorporate literary theory and critical interpretations. When it comes to English, I find one of the most important teaching strategies is to work with texts that the student enjoys and finds engaging. Sometimes older students will have set texts, but especially for younger students I will spend some time trying to get to know the student, and a lot of time at the start of the course researching books that they might enjoy - this pays dividends when we spend a whole course reading and answering questions about these books.

Additional information:

I am based in London, but do a lot of my teaching online. I also work as a filmmaker where I write and direct short film projects and this is often a fun topic to discuss as I'm getting to know students.
